Mail records setup for various HostPapa email services

HostPapa offers various email services to their customers depending on their needs, but they have their own mail DNS record setup. In this article, we’ll show you how to set up mail records for each of the email services HostPapa offers, including:

Shared and reseller web hosting plan

To set up mail records for a shared or reseller package, you will first have to obtain the IP address of your account from your welcome email. Please note that these steps are only required if your domain’s DNS is handled by a third-party DNS provider (if your domain is pointed to HostPapa nameservers – everything will be configured automatically). Once you have the IP address, the following records will have to be added:

A Record: point mail.yourdomain.com. subdomain to the IPADDRESS from welcome email via A record

MX record: point yourdomain.com. to mail.yourdomain.com. subdomain via MX record (priority 0)

TXT record: point yourdomain.com. to “v=spf1 +a +mx +ip4:IPADDRESS include:relay.mailchannels.net ~all”

Make sure to replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain name and IPADDRESS with IP address from your welcome email.

Example:

mail.hostpapasupport.com. IN A 104.25.5.108

hostpapasupport.com. IN MX 0 mail.hostpapasupport.com.

hostpapasupport.com. IN TXT "v=spf1 +a +mx +ip4:104.25.5.108 include:relay.mailchannels.net ~all"

TXT record: point yourdomain.com. to “v=spf1 include:_spf.hostedemail.com ~all”

Glossary

DNS (Domain Name System): an Internet system that converts human-memorable domain names (like www.hostpapa.com) into computer-readable addresses (like 104.25.6.108). DNS uses zone files in your server to map domain names to IP addresses. This system is like the phone book of the Internet that organizes and identifies domain names.

MX record: Mail Exchange (MX) records direct a domain’s email to the servers hosting the domain’s user accounts. To send and receive emails on the domain, you’ll always need to have a correct MX record.

CNAME record: A CNAME or Canonical Name record is a type of resource record in the DNS used to specify that a domain name is an alias for another domain, the “canonical” domain. For instance, www.example.com might link to example.com.

TXT record: A TXT record is a DNS record that provides text information to sources outside your domain that can be used for several different purposes. The record’s value can be either human or machine-readable text. At HostPapa, we mainly use TXT records to implement email security measures (SPF, DKIM, etc.).

A record: An A or Address record (also known as a host record) maps a domain to the physical IP address of the computer hosting that domain.
